Jones girls win in opening round of state

The Jones County softball team swept McIntosh 6-1 and 15-0 Wednesday in Gray in the opening round of the Class 5A state playoffs.

The Lady Hounds advance to the second round next Wednesday and Thursday at South Effingham, which swept Veterans in the first round Wednesday. Jones County will be looking for a little revenge against the Mustangs because they knocked the Lady Hounds out in the first round of state last season.

McIntosh took a 1-0 lead in Wednesday's first game with a run in the second inning. But Jones County scored three in the third, two in the fourth and one in the fifth to pull away.

There was little drama in the second game. The Lady Hounds jumped ahead 4-0 in the first inning and kept adding on the rest of the way.

Sophomore pitcher Savannah Williams went the distance for the win in the first game, and junior Mayson Watford did the same in the nightcap.
