Kitchens spearheads cleanup day

A community cleanup spearheaded by a Jones County commissioner was a big success and is slated to become an annual bragging-rights competition among board members.

District 1 Commissioner Sam Kitchens happily received the first Jones County Community Pride Cleanup trophy from Chairman Chris Weidner at the April 17 board meeting.

Kitchens announced his plan to support the Keep Jones Beautiful and Keep America Beautiful annual campaigns in a board meeting earlier in the year and issued a challenge to his fellow commissioners to see who could pick up the most trash.

Kitchens said littering was his pet peeve, and he considered the cleanup a matter of community pride, which became a theme of the challenge.
