Knowles ready to lead DFE Dragons

Dames Ferry Elementary School will start its school year with a new principal who is already a familiar face for its students and faculty.

Leigh Ann Knowles was officially appointed principal at the elementary school at the July 12 Board of Education meeting, and she has taken the reins of leadership with gusto.

Knowles served as assistant principal of DFES for eight years, and 19 of her 20 years of teaching experience have been spent at the school. The principal recalled that her first teaching job was at Gray Elementary School.

She said she began as a first-grade teacher and moved to DFES the following year to teach first grade. Knowles recalled that was the first year the school was opened, and she was the youngest teacher at the school.

“I remember I had 15 students in my class and a parapro for an hour a day,” she said.

The average first-grade class size at the school this year is 23-24 students.
