Lady Hounds surging as playoffs approach

Jones County’s girls won two important region games last week against teams ahead of them in the standings, beating Union Grove 11-7 at home and Ola 9-4 on the road.

This week they finish the regular season with four region games that will determine their fate for the playoffs.

After a slow start, the Lady Hounds have been on fire, winning nine of their last 11 games to improve to 16-6, including four straight in region play.

But four of their six losses were to region foes in the first half of the season, so there is no margin for error if they want to host in the first round of the region playoffs, which begin Oct. 2.

“We really need to win out to be sure of a good seed for region,” coach Blake Lyons said. “If we do, we’ll be no worse than third in the standings, and we could be as high as second if some other games go our way.
