Leonard third in Wingfoot Classic

Jones County’s Erin Leonard, competing individually, placed third last Saturday in the tough Wingfoot Cross-Country Classic in Cartersville.

“She came down to earth a little bit,” coach Geoff Moore said of his speedy junior. “Erin had a hard week of practice, because we are training to win state, not a midseason meet. She didn’t have the juice in her legs she needed when the girl from Colquitt County made a surge to pull away about a mile and a half into the race.”

Senior Elizabeth Funderburk won the five-kilometer race with a time of 17:32.48. Another senior, Rafaella Gibbons of Winter Park High in Florida, was second at 18:05.20 to just edge Leonard, who ran 18:07.56.

Jones County competed in a makeup meet at Warner Robins Monday, but Leonard did not run. The Lady Hounds still won, led by freshman Laney Doster, who finished first with a time of 20:45.38. The Jones County boys were third, led by senior Zeb Wilson, who placed 14th at 19:07.69. See the full results in next week’s paper.

The teams run in Cochran at 5 p.m. on Thursday.
