Melvin “Kent” Johnson

MONROE COUNTY: Melvin “Kent” Johnson was born June 11, 1949, to the late Hubert Sr. and Lillian Johnson in Juliette. He departed this life Saturday, Dec. 19, 2015. Kent was the sixth of seven children, predeceased by his brother, Hubert Jr., and his sister, Mary Ruth.

Kent, as all family called him, was educated in Monroe County Schools and joined the St. Peter Rock Baptist Church at an early age under the leadership of the Rev. Leroy Hendricks.

After high school, Kent entered the Marine Corps, serving in Vietnam and Operation Desert Storm, where he was known as “Top,” retiring officially in 1993 after 25 years of service. For 28 years, he was employed by the Jones County Sheriff’s Department until he retired Aug. 20, 2011.

Not to be idle during his retirement, he was working part time with the Department of Juvenile Justice as a transportation driver.

Kent was a joyful man with a sense of humor that could keep you laughing. He never met a person he could not get along with. He liked to say, “I’m known in three different counties.” Kent was known by his sense of style in suits and always looked his best. He was the pillar of the family. His dedication to his family was beyond reproach.

Kent’s dedication to his church and surrounding churches will always be a testament of his life. Ever ready to do what was needed, always on the alert as how he could help, comfort and cheer someone with words of encouragement.  He was chairman of the Deacon Board, Sunday School and vice president of the Progressive Laymen’s Choir.

Kent is survived by Lillie Ruth, the love of his life with whom he was married for 42 years; sons, Timothy, Terrence (Schwanda), and Minister Tremaine (Jacinta); 10 grandchildren; sisters, Dorothy, Mozzie, and Emma of New York, and Thelma of Atlanta; sister and brother-in-law, Ollie Mae and Ulysees Ussery of Monticello; one aunt, Rosa Andrews of Atlanta; nieces; nephews; and a host of cousins and friends who loved him dearly.
