Nelson places sixth at state wrestling meet

Senior Nick Nelson made a strong showing after losing his first match, winning his next three in a row with pins on the way to a sixth-place finish for Jones County in the GHSA state wrestling tournament last week.

Nelson wound up going 3-3 in the 138-pound division of the Class 5A portion of the meet held at the Macon Coliseum last Thursday through Saturday.

“It was great for Nick to come back and place for us his senior season,” Jones County coach Jeff Sloan said. “He really got on a roll there after a close loss in his first match. He finally got stopped by a really good wrestler from Starr’s Mill, then lost another close match to finish sixth. But placing at state is a great accomplishment.”

Two of his teammates did not fare as well.
