New coaches settling in with Jones County teams

There is almost always some turnover in the coaching staffs at a school from one year to the next, but it has been an especially busy spring and early summer for Jones County athletic director Barry Veal and the school’s remaining head coaches in lining up their staffs for the coming school year.

“It has been busy, that’s for sure,” Veal said. “But a lot of the ones who left did so for promotions, so that is always a positive. And I think we’ve been fortunate to find some very capable replacements who are joining us.”

It was already announced earlier in the year that girls’ basketball and cross-country were getting new head coaches. Lance Pittman stepped down as basketball coach, as did Mike Denaro from the cross-country team.

ChoRhonda Gwaltney was hired to coach girls’ basketball, and Geoff Moore, already head girls’ track coach at the school, is taking over cross-country as well.

Gwaltney comes to Gray after six years at Glynn Academy in Brunswick. A former all-conference guard at UNC-Greensboro, she also was an assistant college coach for seven years.

Veal also announced three new head coaches in other sports this week – Gwaltney as tennis coach, Kyle Smith as wrestling coach and Jay Floyd as boy’s track coach.

Alisha Gordon is stepping down as head tennis coach but remaining as a teacher at Clifton Ridge Middle School.
