Scouting Committee seeks community support to keep up Eston Altman center

A dinner at the Eston Altman Scouting Center brought together community leaders who were interested in the future of Scouting.

The keynote speaker for the Jan. 19 event was Jones County Sheriff Butch Reece, who talked about the importance of Scouting for young people. Reece said he grew up in Jones County and began in Scouting as a Cub Scout. He recalled the first building the Scouts met in and the construction of the current building.

The sheriff referenced the Scout code pledging to honor God and country and pointed out it was a code all should live by.

“As a community, I hope we all can work together to get more young people involved in Scouting,” Reece said.

The sheriff said he had concerns about criminal organizations attempting to form in the county, and that makes involving young people in Scouting even more important.
