Youth learn about law enforcement, safety

Summer in Jones County started off on a positive note for 32 youngsters who attended the Sheriff’s Department’s first summer camp.

School Resource Officer Deputy Robbie Walker coordinated the camp that took place June 13-16, from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., for boys and girls ages 8-12.

Walker said the first goal of the camp was to make sure the campers had fun but also to let the youngsters get to know and feel comfortable with Jones County law enforcement officers.

The deputy said Sheriff Butch Reece told the officers who volunteered to work with the campers to relax and have fun.

“We want the kids to know we are here for them if they need us,” he said.

The schedule started with breakfast in the E-wing building at the sheriff’s department every morning. Walker said the sheriff greeted the campers the first morning and they were given time to get acquainted with each other.
