JCHS wins preseason game

The Lady Hounds are to host Houston County at 6 p.m. today in their home opener for the 2018 softball season.

Jones County was scheduled to open the season Tuesday evening at Region 4-5A foe Woodland-Stockbridge.

The Lady Hounds defeated Veterans 7-4 last Tuesday in a preseason game in Bonaire.

Senior Brenay Howard went 2-for-3 with a double, a triple and three RBIs, and junior Mackenzie Kilpatrick was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI to lead the Lady Hounds at the plate.

Junior Savannah Williams started and got the victory, holding the Lady Warhawks to three unearned runs on two hits in three innings. Freshman Destin Howard held Veterans hitless with four strikeouts and one walk in two innings of work, and senior Mayson Watford finished, giving up one unearned run on one hit and striking out two.

Jones County jumped ahead with two runs in the top of the first.

Watford led off with a triple. Junior Madison Bennett was hit by a pitch and stole second. Sacrifice flies by junior Kloey Goins and Brenay Howard brought the runners home.

The Lady Hounds added a run in the second. Freshman Stephanie Youngblood led off with a double, moved to third when junior Kaitlyn Brower flied out to center, and scored when junior Makinsey Long reached on an error.

Jones County put it away with four runs in the third. Howard doubled in the first two runs, Kilpatrick doubled in the third and Brower singled in the fourth.

The Lady Hounds are also scheduled to host Dutchtown at 5:55 p.m. on Thursday, then they hit the road for a game at Wayne County on Friday and two at Jeff Davis on Saturday. Next Monday they host Strong Rock Christian at 5:55 p.m.
