CROSS-COUNTRY

Sophomore Laney Doster won the opening race of the season for the Jones County cross-country team, finishing in 20:06.33 at the Into the Trail Invitational in Locust Grove last Saturday.

Madisen Mitchum, another sophomore, was 12th, junior Lu Woolfolk was 21st and sophomore Haley Smith was 25th to help the Lady Hounds to a third place finish among the 11 teams entered.

Pope placed first and Union Grove was second.

In the boys’ race, senior Eli Boland placed 20th to lead the Greyhounds, who finished eighth in the 14-school field.

Jones County senior Erin Leonard, the two-time defending state champion in Class 5A, is recovering from an ankle injury and did not run.

Coach Geoff Moore said he expects her to compete this Saturday, however, when Jones County runs in the Saucony Battle of Atlanta at the Nash Farms Battlefield in Hampton.

“This is probably one of the top four meets in the state outside of region and state, so it will be good to see how our runners do against tough competition,” Moore said.

“Nobody ran particularly well last week. I had put our kids through a tough week of workouts and they were tired getting off the bus up there. It was also really hot and humid.

“But Laney did a good job and got the win, and Madisen showed she will be able to help us this year,” Moore said. “I’m still excited about our girls for this season once they have a few races to get acclimated.

“And I believe our boys will show a lot of improvement. We’re pretty young, and it was the first time at a high school meet for a good many of them. They’ll get better when they see what they need to do as far as pacing and running hard to compete at this level.”

Pope also won the boys’ team title at the meet, and Sequoyah was second. Union Grove junior Domonic Macias was the individual winner with a time of 16:51.51.

Following are the place of finish and times for Jones County’s top six runners in each of the five kilometer races last Saturday:
