Schools to close early for eclipse

Students of Jones County schools are receiving a half-day off from school due to an upcoming solar eclipse.

School system officials recently issued a notice to parents, students, faculty and community stakeholders about the decision to have an early release Monday, Aug. 21, the day of a solar eclipse.

One of the reasons for the early release is to give students the opportunity to experience the event. A solar eclipse happens when the moon passes between the sun and earth and blocks all or part of the sun for up to three hours.

Safety was stated as another reason for the early release.
