HOMETOWN HEROES: Graham, Humphries pull woman from burning home

A 60-year-old wheelchair-bound woman escaped serious injury and quite possibly much worse because of the heroism of two men from different agencies who literally went into a burning building to save her.

Jones County Fire Chief Don Graham and Sheriff’s Department Deputy Sgt. John Humphries arrived at 107 India Woods at the same time, and, without exchanging a word between them, crawled into the duplex to find the victim.

A neighbor who lived on the other side of the duplex was in the front yard when they arrived and told the rescuers that the woman had gone back inside the residence that was already filling with smoke.

Humphries’ report of the fire stated that smoke was billowing out of the front of the duplex and from the roof.
