Bypass bridge named for Otis Redding

Saturday was another special day in the legacy of Otis Redding.

The Otis Redding Memorial Bridge was officially dedicated Sept. 23 with the placement of signs on the Highway 11 Bypass bridge and a moving ceremony at the Main Street Station Otis Redding Memorial in Downtown Gray.

County Commissioner Jonathan Pitts opened the ceremony by explaining the teamwork involved in christening the Otis Redding Memorial Bridge.

“Thanks to David ‘Demun’ Jones, who called me a couple of months ago with the idea about naming the bridge after Otis Redding,” Pitts said. “I took the idea to the Jones County commissioners, who unanimously approved it, then moved it on to State Rep. Susan Dykes Holmes. Susan took the request to Atlanta, and Gov. Nathan Deal signed off on it. Thanks to everyone involved; that’s why we’re here today.”
