Jones County’s first Bands in the Sand joint event is in the final planning stages with more support needed for the free community celebration.
The contemporary Christian rock, Grammy nominated group NewSong is headlining the Aug. 11 event that definitely has something to offer all ages.
Bands in the Sand is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. at the Morris Bank Recreation Complex on Recreation Road in Gray and is a combination of two successful events. The combined Back to School Beach Bash and Back to School Gospel Concert is hoped to bring the community together for an afternoon and evening of fun for the kids and entertainment for everyone.
Local talent will take the stage to open for NewSong. Those singers will include Logan Crosby, Emma Robinson, Jon Scott, Haley Favors and Bethany Tapee.
Jones County Parks and Recreation Director Matt Goins and Main Street Gray Manager Haley Watson are the driving forces behind the activities that will include a sand beach, kiddie pools, fun with inflatables, beach volleyball, fire trucks, a car show, selfie station, football demos by the JCHS Greyhounds, and of course, a variety of concessions.
Everything is free with the exception of the food, and all those profits will be donated back to the event.
The sole purpose of Bands in the Sand is to bring the community together for one big community celebration as the school year gets underway.
Several local churches and businesses have pitched in to help, but more assistance is needed. In addition to donations for last minute expenses, Goins said volunteers are needed to help with the variety of events that will be underway.
