A couple of GES Zoomies, the school’s Sport Stack team, Parker O’Gorman and Lucas Watts, attended the AAU Junior Olympics in Greensboro, N.C. July 26-28. Students qualified for the Junior Olympics after attending the Hotlanta tournament in February.
Sport Stacking is stacking cups up and down in predetermined sequences and patterns. The goal of sport stacking is to up stack and down stack as quickly as possible without fumbling the cups.
Over the course of the 3 days, Parker and Lucas competed in individuals (3-3-3, 3-6-3, cycle), relays (cycle) and doubles (cycle). Parker and Lucas participated in individuals, doubles and relays with stackers from 37 states and four countries (Canada, Kyrgyzstan, Singapore and Korea). Stackers are ages 6-74 and include special stackers.
Parker made finals (top 10) in individuals for the 3-3-3, 3-6-3, and the cycle. He received silver in parent doubles, silver in relay (head-to-head), bronze in relay (timed cycle), 4th in relay (raise the bar), 7th in 3-3-3, 10th in 3-6-3 and 8th in cycle.
Lucas received gold in parent doubles, silver in relay (head-to-head), bronze in relay (timed cycle), 4th in doubles (cycle), and 4th in relay (raise the bar).
Sport Stacking encourages all family members to stack. Geoff O’Gorman and Angela Watts also competed in individuals, doubles and relays in their own age groups bringing home seven medals in the various categories.
Both parents enjoyed competing in their age group and with their kids in doubles. Doubles stacking is where one person stacks with their right hand and the other person stacks with their left hand. Teamwork and communication are necessary skills to be successful.
If you have any questions about Sport Stacking, please contact Angela Watts at Gray Elementary. The club is expanding to include students in first through fifth grades from WES, TWES and DFES this upcoming year.
