How a second-grader sparked a reading revolution

EDUCATION

In a bustling second-grade classroom, amid the hum of learning and laughter, one student and his classmates stand out as a beacon of creativity and imagination.

Reese Rickman has found a love for reading comic books. His favorite comic at the moment is the Dogman series. Discovering this series has ignited his imagination, creativity, and set him on a path of literacy exploration.

Reese’s newfound passion for comics has spilled over into the classroom, inspiring him to create something extraordinary: the Comic Club. With boundless enthusiasm and a knack for leadership, Reese rallied his classmates to join him on a journey into the world of comics. Together, they are creating their own set of comics. They are working together in a mostly self-guided discovery of storytelling, learning the ins and outs of writing, illustration, and character development. Most of all they are learning to work as a team to create something they love. The Comic Club is more than just a creative outlet; it is a community bound by a shared love of comics and a desire to learn. Each member has a role to play, from writers and illustrators to editors.

They collaborate on their own comic books, redesigning their favorites, and bringing their imaginations to life one panel at a time.

Reese’s passion didn’t stop at the classroom door. Determined to share his love of comics with others, he took it upon himself to spread the joy of reading to his friends. With the help of his mom, Reese purchased copies of his favorite Dogman titles and has them available at recess for his classmates to read, ensuring that everyone has access to the adventures that have captured his heart.

Reese’s journey from a reluctant reader to a comic book connoisseur is not just a personal triumph: it is a testament to the transformative power of literature and the boundless potential of a child’s imagination. His leadership and enthusiasm have inspired his classmates to embrace the magic of storytelling and the power of imagination. Mrs. Phillips second-grade classroom has comic book vibes, all day every day.
