Turner Woods Elementary School held a father-daughter dance in February for the girls who attend the school to spend time with the father figures in their lives and make everlasting memories.
Alicia Henderson, a teacher at Turner Woods Elementary School, said the father-daughter dance was an extremely exciting and important experience for the girls at the school. She said everyone enjoyed their time on the dance floor.
“We’ve been doing this father-daughter dance for about 10 years but had to stop during COVID-19.
We invite all fathers, father figures, grandfathers, uncles, older brothers, or any other positive male role model to bring their little princess and come to our ball,” she said. “They got to have refreshments, pictures done and dance with their father figure while the DJ played music.”
She said the point of the dance was to encourage the male role models in the girls’ lives to be a part of their lives as they grow up and make memories.
She said the girls at Turner Woods Elementary School also got to dress up, dance and spend time with their friends.
“We really like to promote male figures being involved in the girls’ lives here at Turner Woods. We want the girls to know they can be treated like a princess sometimes. This gives the father figures in their lives time to spend some one-on-one quality time with their daughters,” Henderson said.
Will Horkan, father of Virginia and Eliza Horkan, said he was excited to take his two daughters to the father-daughter dance and make more memories with them. He said he has photos when he took Virginia to the dance when she was in kindergarten. He said he isn’t a big dancer, but he was excited to dance with his daughters.
“We had been looking forward to this dance for a while now in our house.
I heard so much about it.
It was on my calendar for a while now,” he said. “It’s important for me to spend time with my daughters, because I need to set an example for how I should treat them, spend time with them and let them know I love them.”
The teacher said the girls were really excited about the father-daughter dance and talked about what they planned to wear a lot. She said some of the girls at the school even had their hair, nails and makeup done.
She said they wanted the girls to feel special that night.
“They had a great time.
They were on the dance floor, pulling their dad along and twirling about.
It was just a lot of fun. My favorite thing about the evening was watching the girls who got their reluctant dads on the dance floor, because they couldn’t say no to their little girls,” the teacher said.
Virginia Horkan, who is in the third grade, said her favorite part about the father-daughter dance at Turner Woods Elementary School was dancing, because she enjoys dancing a lot. She said she liked being able to dress up fancy, and she liked that her dress was gold.
“I was really excited for the dance, because it’s a lot of fun,” Virginia said. “I did the dance in kindergarten before. It’s fun to spend time together and be with my dad. I wanted to dance a lot with my dad. This is something I’ll always remember doing with Eliza and my dad.”
