Woman creates Easter hats

Lois Waytovich, a local woman in the Jones County community, made Easter hats for the ladies at Haddock Christian Church to wear commemorating the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Waytovich said she moved to Haddock about four years ago. She’s lived in a bunch of different places, such as Florida, Maryland, Virginia, and she grew up in Maine. She moved to Haddock, because her daughter lives in Haddock.

“I like the smallness of Jones County. I like the adventure of going places, and I like the church,” she said. “They accepted me, and I’m very happy with that. I like the people at the church, and I go for the fellowship.”

She said her church didn’t have an Easter service, so she will be passing out the hats to the ladies at the church the next Sunday. She said she found the hats from multiple different places, such as Goodwill and other thrift stores. She gathered around 25 hats.

“This is an idea I got from a lady at church who sits in the back row. She always has a fancy hat on, so one Sunday I sat with her. We decided to wear our prettiest hats the next Sunday, and we became friends. She was the inspiration for the hats,” Waytovich said.

The hat designer said she attends Haddock Christian Church, and she’s very involved in the church. She said it took a while to decorate all of the hats, so she can have them ready for the ladies for resurrection Sunday this April.

“I started decorating the hats. I changed them from nothing, into something. It reminded me of the resurrection, and that’s why the butterfly is the symbol I use,” she said. “That was the theme behind these hats, and I always enjoy having a project to do.”

Waytovich said they plan on wearing hats every year to church on resurrection Sunday. She said Easter to her is more than just the Easter bunny or eggs; it’s about her faith.

She said she used to paint, and she enjoyed creating the Easter hats for church. It gave her something to do she liked doing and kept her from getting bored. She said a lot of her creations represent God in some form.

“I encouraged the women to come early to try on the hats, and I made boutonnieres for the men,” she said. “We will wear the hats during the service at church. It’s going to look so nice when you see all of those women with their hats on and the men with their boutonnieres attached to them. They get to keep them afterwards.”
