Gray Carden Club welcomes extension agent

Meeting at Bradley Baptist Church on September 3, Gray Garden Club members welcomed Keith Fielder, Putnam County Extension Agent, for a most interesting program on Plants for Fall Color. He used photographs by master gardeners in his area to illustrate suggested plantings and discussed various species to be used such as violas, kale, sedum, ornamental peppers and Mexican bush sage. He also suggested late plantings of zinnias to last into the fall that will compliment late blooming species like marigolds. As usual, the members had many questions for Mr. Fielder about vegetable gardens. The discussion started about squash borers, but he advised the problem this year has been pickle worms in squash, gourds, pumpkins and cucumbers. He suggested an effective insecticide and instructed that it should be sprayed in last afternoon, avoiding flowers so as not to harm pollinators, and repeated every 5-6 days. The members thanked him for sharing his knowledge with the club.
