A Macon man who allegedly ran after being seen shoplifting at a store on Shurling Drive is in custody facing multiple charges after being tracked down by a K-9 officer last week.
Reginald Bernard Jackson was arrested Nov. 20 and charged with one count of shoplifting and three counts of obstruction of an officer.
A report of the arrest by Jones County Sheriff’s Office Deputy David Anthony Brown stated while on patrol he heard a call that a Black male wearing a black jacket, light colored pants and black shoes was seen running across the highway. Officers on the scene requested a K-9 on the ground. Brown said he and K-9 Officer Nessa were close and advised the officers they were en route to the last known area of the suspect.
Brown said he put Nessa on the suspect’s trail, and she tracked the suspect to a fence. The deputy put the K-9 across the fence, and they kept going. As they crossed the yard, the suspect was seen on Willis Drive between a fire station and gas station.
Brown said he saw the suspect running through a yard and crossing over Derrell Drive, where he was taken into custody.
“The suspect could hear that K-9 Nessa and I were coming across the front yard. He walked out from the carport area, and I gave him orders to get on the ground and put his hands behind his back,” the deputy said.
Brown said Deputy Mathew Dennis cuffed the suspect and placed him in the back seat of this patrol car. Warrants were taken for the charges of shoplifting and obstruction.
Sheriff Butch Reece announced the arrest on Facebook. He said deputies were called to the store on Shurling Drive after a man took off with merchandise and ran straight into the woods across the street.
“Luckily, Investigator Barron Hall and Deputy Dennis were already close by and saw him take off. Our team set up a perimeter within minutes, and with the help of K-9 Deputy Brown and his partner Nessa, the suspect, Reginald Jackson of Macon, was found and taken into custody without any issues,” he said.
“Shoutout to everyone involved for the quick response and teamwork … and of course to Nessa, who never misses.”
