Burston to serve as interim

Members of the Jones County Board of Education selected an interim superintendent for Jones County Schools last Friday before announcing the exit of the current superintendent.

The board had a called meeting April 18 and released a statement that was to be circulated to JCSS staff members. Four of the five members attended the meeting. Board member Mike Gordon was out of town.

The notice states Superintendent Charles Lundy made the decision to pursue other professional and personal goals and will therefore not be returning as superintendent next year.

“This board appreciates the long service and dedication Mr. Lundy has devoted to the Jones County School System. We wish him all the best and look forward to hearing about his future successes.”

The statement names Clinton Burston as the interim superintendent, but states there is no definite timeline for Lundy’s departure.

The notice added that the Georgia School Board Association would be assisting Jones County in the search for the next superintendent.

Board member Brady Skinner made the motion to appoint Burston as interim superintendent, and the vote to approve was unanimous.

Burston is currently the JCSS Executive Director of Accounting and School Improvement. He served as assistant principal of Dames Ferry before being named principal of the Jones County Ninth Grade Academy in 2006.

Lundy has been JCSS superintendent since 2021. He received written notification during an April 15 closed session of the Board of Education that his contract for the 2025-26 school year would not be renewed.
