Thief in the area

Lt. Carr was dispatched to a local residence in reference to a burglary. Carr met with the female complainant when he arrived. The complainant walked Carr through her storage building to the back and into another storage building that had sliding doors. The doors are not locked but are usually just pulled together. Walking through the storage buildings, Carr observed yard equipment. The complainant stated that there were four Stihl chain saws missing, two Stihl weed eaters and one Stihl handheld blower missing. The complainant advised that they were all gas powered and in working condition.

Carr asked the complainant if she had the serial numbers for the equipment and she stated she did not at that time, however, she would look back at their records and attempt to find the serial numbers. The female also advised Carr that they were going to put up cameras and make sure the doors are more secured. The complainant said she just wanted to make sure the incident was documented and make the Sheriff’s Office aware of a thief in the area. Carr advised the complainant that he would document the incident and pass the information on to investigators, and to call the office back if she can locate the serial numbers for the equipment. Carr gave her a case number and advised dispatch to create a property check.

Marijuana and stolen firearm

Lt. Carr was monitoring traffic on Hwy. 49 when he was alerted to a vehicle having an expired registration. Carr check the tag number of the vehicle through the GCIC/NCIC database, and it confirmed the tag was expired. At that time, Carr pulled out behind the vehicle and activated his blue lights and conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle. As the car come to a stop, the lieutenant noticed the back seat passenger lean down towards the floorboard of the vehicle in a “reaching” manner.

Carr made contact with the male driver and two male passengers and advised the reason for the stop. The male driver stated the vehicle belonged to his father and he was unaware of the registration status. While speaking to the driver, Carr detected the odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle. The lieutenant asked the driver and passengers if there were any weapons inside the vehicle and they stated no. Dep. Steib arrived on scene to assist, and all three occupants were asked to exit the vehicle to do a probable cause search. Carr started the search on the passenger side and moved to the back seat. Up under the back seat, Carr located a Glock 22 with an extended magazine. The lieutenant had Dispatch check the serial number on the firearm and it came back to show as being stolen out of Bibb County. Carr then returned to the backseat male passenger and secured him in handcuffs. All three occupants were read their Miranda Warning and all three stated they understood their rights. The lieutenant asked all three male occupants who the firearm belonged to and all three stated the gun did not belong to them and they don’t know how it got inside the vehicle. Carr returned to the vehicle and continued the search.

A Glock 19X was located under the driver’s seat. When the serial number was run on that firearm, nothing came back. The three males were asked again about the firearms, and they said they did not own the weapons. Carr then located a bag of marijuana inside the center console and the male driver stated that did belong to him. Dep. Steib transported the two male passengers to the Jones County LEC, and Carr transported the male driver to the Jones County LEC. The male driver was cited for expired tag and possession of marijuana less than an ounce. The two male passengers were charged with theft by receiving stolen property. The vehicle was turned over to the registered owner.
