A Jones County man will serve five years on probation after entering a guilty plea to a hit and run accident that occurred on New Clinton Road earlier this year.
Bob Allen, 59, was in Jones County Superior Court Sept. 10 to enter the negotiated plea that included 180 days of confinement but credit for time served in custody from the date of his April 4 arrest until the sentencing date.
The case was prosecuted by assistant District Attorney Cara Fiore, and Allen was represented by Defense Attorney Michael Chidester.
An article in The Jones County News referenced the incident report of the accident and Allen’s arrest by Jones County Sheriff’s Deputy Artrail Braziel. The deputy said he received a call April 3 just before midnight about a man being struck by a motor vehicle on New Clinton Road.
Braziel arrived on the scene to find the male victim still lying in the road. For safety, the man was removed from the roadway to a driveway nearby. Braziel said he was able to identify the victim while waiting for EMS to arrive.
The deputy said he found a piece of debris believed to be from the vehicle involved in the accident at the scene. The house closest to the accident scene had a doorbell camera, but its footage did not capture the incident.

Dan Ribeiro used Flock camera systems to identify possible suspect vehicles traveling through the area at the time the man was struck, and two vehicles were identified.
The deputies checked out the addresses, which included the suspect later identified as Allen. His vehicle was observed with visible damage. Braziel said he observed damage to the windshield and front passenger side. The deputy also noticed a paint transfer consistent with the hit-and-run victim’s motor scooter.
Braziel added that the piece of debris he collected from the scene was consistent and a match to the damaged area of the suspect’s vehicle.
After being read his Miranda rights, Allen spoke to the deputies. The suspect said he believed he had hit a deer. A wrecker was called for Allen’s vehicle, and he was placed under arrest.
