Jones County Fire Rescue helps victims of all shapes and sizes, sometimes even those with four legs.
When firefighters arrived at the scene of a structure fire on Mathis Road in Haddock July 29, the two juveniles who were home at the time of the blaze were already outside. Two of their pets, however, were still inside.
The cat was found to be deceased and the dog, Cracker, showed little signs of life. It was reported that firefighters John Gallagher and Hunter Banknell brought out the dog, and paramedics Shannon Short and Brooke Pittman started working on him.
The paramedics administered oxygen and were able to revive Cracker.
Fire Rescue volunteer Wayne Grier said the dog was unresponsive and had very shallow breathing when he was brought out of the home, but before they left the scene, he was drinking water and walking.
A report of the fire by Jones County Sheriff’s Deputy Matthew Dennis stated that, when he responded to the call of a structure fire on Mathis Road, he made contact with two male juveniles.
The eldest stated he was in his bedroom when the smoke alarm went off and came out to see the stove on fire. The juvenile said he ran to his brother’s room and got him out of the residence.
They ran to a neighbor’s house for help. Dennis said he was told the neighbors returned to get a couple of pets out the residence before firefighters arrived. He said a family member was contacted and parents notified.
The home was considered a total loss and the Red Cross contacted to assist the family.
