Early morning blaze destroys Haddock log cabin

JONES COUNTY FIRE DEPARTMENT

A log cabin in Haddock was a total loss following an early morning fire, but thankfully no injuries were reported.

Emergency Management Director and Jones County Fire Chief Don Graham issued a press release about the structure fire that took place Sept. 10. Graham said Jones County Fire Rescue personnel arrived at the scene of the log cabin on Smith Road in Haddock at 2:37 a.m. to find the single-story structure fully engulfed in fire.

“Firefighters took a defensive posture to keep that large blaze at bay and from spreading to other dwellings nearby,” he said.

The chief said the homeowner’s son was at home when the fire started. He said it was clear that the fire started outside the back door of the cabin, and the homeowner’s son stated that he had smoked and flicked several cigarettes outside the door before the fire started.

Graham said the homeowners live in South Georgia and were notified that the house was a total loss. He added that the family built the log cabin in the 1980s.

“The cause of the blaze was likely due to a smoldering cigarette, but the investigation is still ongoing,” the chief said.

Graham said no injuries were reported.
