Early voting underway for presidential primary

As voting looms large in national news across broadcast stations and social media, advance voting has begun in Jones County as Georgia’s Presidential Primary approaches next month.

Advance voting started Feb. 19 and will continue through March 8, including Saturdays, during the hours of9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Advance voting in Jones County takes place in the Elections Office located inside the Government Center at 166 Industrial Boulevard in Gray.

The date of Georgia’s Presidential Primary is Tuesday, March 12. Election Superintendent Marion G. Hatton said, on that date, voting will take place at all Jones County precincts from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Hatton said at the end of Saturday’s voting, the number of those casting ballots in Jones County during the first week of advance voting was 315. That number included 21 who voted Saturday.

The superintendent said her office has mailed out 70 absentee ballots for the Presidential Primary, and 33 have been returned and accepted.

March 1 is the final day to request an absentee ballot for the Presidential Primary.

Examples of sample ballots for the primary election can be found on the Jones County Elections and Voter Registration Facebook page or on the Secretary of State’s website, sos.georgia.gov/ elections.

Voters can verify their voting status on the My Voter page, also located on the Secretary of State’s website.

In addition to early voting, qualifying for Jones County’s local elected offices will begin at 9 a.m. Monday, March 4, and will end at noon Friday, March 8. All Jones County candidates will qualify in the Conference Room at the Government Center.

The local elected positions of Jones County Commission Chairman and commissioners in District 1, 2, 3, and 4, coroner, board of education members representing Jones County Districts 2 & 4, tax commissioner, clerk of probate court, judge of probate court and sheriff are all up for election this year.
