Two juveniles, both students at Jones County High School, were apprehended after stealing a car and fleeing from law enforcement officers.
The juveniles, ages 16 and 15, were taken into custody Dec. 22 and charged with fleeing or attempting to elude police, aggressive driving, failure to maintain lane, failure to stop at stop sign, aggravated assault (other weapon) and driving while unlicensed or with an expired license.
A report of the incident leading to the arrests by Gray Police Officer Terius Farley stated he was in the parking lot of a local parts store at 2:45 a.m. when a small black sedan went by at a high rate of speed. The car was a black Nissan Sentra occupied by two individuals.
He activated his radar and found the vehicle was traveling 57 in a 35-mph zone.
Farley got behind the car to perform a traffic stop, and it eventually stopped on Atlanta Road. When he got out to make contact with the driver, the car sped off. Farley said he notified dispatch and initiated a chase in the direction of Lynn Haven Nursing Home.
The officer said attempts to force the Nissan to stop were not successful, and the chase continued on Caney Creek Road, Round Oak-Juliette Road and back to Highway 11 toward Gray. He said the driver of the Nissan slammed on the brakes and swerved several times, almost striking his patrol car.
Farley said Jones County Deputy John Humphries assisted in the chase as did deputies Ayla Morris and David Brown. He said stop sticks were deployed on Old Highway 18, but the juveniles were not stopped until deputies were able to perform a PIT maneuver on Joycliff Road.
The Nissan was reported stolen by a neighbor of one of the juveniles.
