A Macon man who was seriously injured when he wrecked the motorcycle he was riding while attempting to elude law enforcement officers pled guilty to charges relating to the chase in Jones County Superior Court.
Hubert Allen Rudd pled guilty May 12 and received a sentence of one year for the charge of fleeing police officers, five years for theft by receiving stolen property, four years for the possession of methamphetamine and 12 months for the possession of marijuana. The counts are to run consecutively for a total of 10 years with the first 18 months served in confinement. The remainder of the sentence is to be served on probation with credit for time served from his Oct. 19, 2020, arrest.
The report of the incident leading up to the pursuit and ultimate arrest of Rudd by Sgt. Marty Brownlee with the Jones County Sheriff’s Office stated that he responded to a be on the lookout call Aug. 5, 2020, pertaining to a stolen motorcycle. He said he heard a transmission from Sgt. Travis Walker that he had been notified of a stolen motorcycle traveling on Joycliff Road. Brownlee and Sgt. David Little met the motorcycle on Lite N Tie Road and turned around in pursuit. He said the speeds of the pursuit ranged from 45 to 115 mph and crossed the intersections of Lite N Tie and Gray Highway, Randolph and Pulaski, and Randolph and Greene Settlement Road without stopping or yielding for traffic.
The officer said the motorcycle increased its speed and lost control while attempting to turn onto the North Gray Bypass. He said the motorcycle struck the southbound side guard rail.
Brownlee said the motorcycle burst into flames, and the driver was thrown over the guard rail. The sergeant said he called for EMS, fire and rescue and other deputies for road closures. Then he attempted to render aid to the driver while Little worked to extinguish the flames.
Brownlee said the driver had a gaping chest wound, a broken arm and a deep cut to the palm of his hand.
He said the driver was conscious but refused to give his name to officers or to EMS personnel before being transported to the Medical Center by ambulance. While searching through the driver’s pockets for possible identification, Brownlee said he found a clear plastic case containing methamphetamine, marijuana and packaging material.
The sergeant said he later received a phone call from a nurse at the Medical Center stating that a family member had arrived and identified the driver as Rudd. He said the evidence was secured and arrest warrants received for Rudd.
