This spring Jones County Arts community theater group presents “Matilda Jr.” The story is based on Roald Dahl’s beloved children’s book “Matilda”. Matilda Wormwood, played by Ava Gale, is an extraordinary little girl with a vivid imagination, sharp mind, and special powers. Mr. Wormwood and Mrs. Wormwood, played by Gavin Ward and Neveah Johnson, are cruel to Matilda. They call her a “lousy little bookworm” and a bore. Matilda’s only escape is through reading books and storytelling. When she finally arrives to elementary school, her brilliance captures the attention of a young, kind teacher named Miss Honey, played by Bethany Tapee, and the two form a beautiful friendship. Unfortunately, the school is run by Miss Trunchbull, played by Leah Ward, who is a mean headmistress that hates children and punishes them by throwing them in “the chokey”. Matilda is determined to change her story, but will her cleverness be enough to withstand the reign of Agatha Trunchbull?
To hear the rest of the story, tickets are available for presale online at https://jonescounty. booktix.com and will also be sold at the door prior to each show. The cast consists of middle and high school students from Jones County and surrounding areas who have been working hard to produce an outstanding performance. There is so much talent within this group of children who have shared many silly moments and laughter, and their bond is special, which shows in their performance on stage. Cast member Sophia Tritto says, “I’ve had so much fun doing the show! It’s awesome being able to sing and dance with the people I love. I’ve made many new friends and it has been a great learning experience. I definitely think people will fall in love with Matilda Jr. just like I have!”
