An early morning fire on Thanksgiving Day destroyed a Jones County home but thankfully resulted in no injuries.
A press release from Jones County Fire Chief Thomas Coleman stated that the fire was reported at 1 a.m. Nov. 28, and firefighters were on the scene within a few minutes. Coleman said three people were inside the home when the fire broke out, but they all escaped unharmed.
The fire was in a residence on Gateway Court, which is near Ruby Drive and Bethune Avenue.
The chief said the home was fully engulfed in flames when the first firefighters arrived, and it was determined a total loss.
“This was the first call on Thanksgiving Day; one we do not want to hear. The fire was a major loss for the victims who lived there,” he said.
Coleman said fire crews immediately put water on the adjacent house, which was starting to catch fire, just to keep from having two houses on fire.
“Once they obtained a water supply, they were able to bring the house of origin down to a manageable fire utilizing a master stream device,” he said.
The chief said firefighters were on scene approximately four hours until the fire was completely under control.
“The fire appeared to have originated near the garage area, but is still undetermined on exact cause,” he said.
