JONES COUNTY COURTS
Qualifying to fill the vacancy of Judge of Probate Court for Jones County started Monday and will continue until Friday, Aug. 26, at noon.
The office of Probate Judge is non-partisan. Qualifying is taking place at the elections office located at the Jones County Government Center from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. through the noon deadline Friday. The qualifying fee is $1,491.66.
The election for Probate Judge will be held in conjunction with the Nov. 8 General Election. The qualifying notice, as required by law, was included in the call for special election published in The Jones County News June 2, 9, July 29 and Aug. 4.
The special election is necessary due to the resignation of the Hon. Mike Greene, who officially retired March 31. Greene was appointed to the position Oct. 16, 1981, following the resignation of the previous judge. Greene then ran for the position and was elected Nov. 24, 1981, receiving 74 percent of the votes, despite having two opponents.
Greene was 25 and was the youngest judge in Georgia. His 40-year anniversary was celebrated Oct. 15, 2021.
Information posted on the Jones County Board of Elections Facebook page states that all persons who desire to register to vote in the Nov. 8 Election may register through the close of business Oct. 10. All precincts will be open from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. on Election Day.
Early voting for the election begins Oct. 17 at the elections office in the Government Center with Saturday voting dates Oct. 22 and 29.
Should a runoff election be required, it will be held Dec. 6.
