Georgia School Superintendent Richard Woods visited Jones County High School last week to recognize the academic achievements of six Jones County schools.
Woods said the Oct. 28 stop in Jones County was his third stop for the day passing out academic awards from the Georgia Department of Education. The event was also attended by State Sen. Rick Williams and Rep. Dale Washburn.
Jones County School Superintendent Charles Lundy introduced Woods.
“We celebrate the accomplishments of our students and recognize the educators who made it possible,” he said.
Woods explained that awards for reading and literature were given out last year, and this year math awards were added. He said the awards were in the form of banners that have six gromets at the bottom for additional ribbons.
“We want to continue marching to proficiency,” he said. “We had a great year in math.”
The superintendent presented awards to representatives of each school.
Jones County High School received an award for growth in math; Clifton Ridge Middle School for growth and proficiency in math; Gray Station Middle School for growth and proficiency in math; Dames Ferry Elementary School for growth in math; Turner Woods Elementary School for growth in literacy; and Mattie Wells Elementary for growth in math.
Following the presentation of the awards, Woods congratulated all the recipients.
“This is just a start; you have room to improve. I want these awards to recognize the hard work you are doing,” he said.
The superintendent said the intent of the recognition is encouragement. He also announced that there would be a new award next year for third graders. It will be named the John Hancock award.
Woods said it will be presented to schools whose third graders can all write their names in cursive. He said the next level for the award would be for the students who can write the preamble of the constitution in cursive.
He said recognition for high school graduates is also planned.
Lundy thanked Woods and congratulated all those receiving awards.
“Our kids deserve every effort we can give them. Relax and bask in the glory of your achievements,” he said.
