Javian Gibson, a senior at Jones County High School, has earned a place on the Georgia Department of Education’s Student Advisory Council. He is one of 78 students selected from more than 1,250 applicants across the state. The council gives students the opportunity to share their perspectives on education policy and school improvement directly with State School Superintendent Richard Woods.
Gibson applied to join the council with the goal of participating in meaningful conversations with peers who are passionate about making a difference. He expressed a desire to serve his community and gain insight into his future career as an educator.
“I’m glad that there’s an opportunity for my generation to have some input in the important things, such as state legislature, but even more in the school system setting, since this impacts us literally every day,” Gibson said.
He highlighted several key issues in his application, including the importance of Career, Technical, and Agricultural Education (CTAE), funding for extracurricular programs, and increased support for teacher appreciation.
Gibson believes these areas are especially critical given the current teacher shortage in Georgia.
“Growing up, my teachers were one of the biggest sources of inspiration and role models to me. Becoming a teacher means continuing that legacy and being there for students who will need me. This opportunity to be part of our state’s education system and meet Richard Woods is a blessing,” he said.
Gibson has been accepted to Toccoa Falls College. He plans to pursue a degree in Middle Grades Education with concentrations in History and English. His extensive involvement at Jones County High School includes Concert Band, Marching Band, Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA), and Future Georgia Educators (FGE). He currently serves as the flute section leader in the band, a student leadership officer in FCA, and treasurer for FGE.
Kelly Roberson, FCA advisor, shared her thoughts on Gibson’s impact.
“Javian Gibson is a shining example of servant leadership through Fellowship of Christian Athletes. His faith, creativity, and commitment inspire others daily. He leads Bible studies, organizes prayer tables, and spreads encouragement through social media. Javian lives out the heart of FCA’s mission by leading with humility, purpose, and Christ-centered passion,” Roberson said.
Jolynn Aubry, FGE advisor and TAP teacher at Jones County High School, praised Gibson’s leadership and dedication. “It is truly an honor to have been part of Javian’s journey toward becoming an educator.
He possesses a maturity beyond his years and a passion for education that is inspiring for his peers and his teachers alike. He demonstrates a strong sense of purpose and a genuine desire to make a difference in the lives of others. He will bring a unique perspective and spirit of cooperation to the student advisory council.
Javian has a very bright future ahead of him, and his future students will be blessed by having him as their teacher,” she said.
