GCSU student’s death under investigation

TRAGIC LOSS

A Georgia College student was found dead in his bed and an investigation is ongoing by local authorities.

Ethan Knight, 23, of Gray, was discovered by his roommates shortly before 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 16.

“At this point and time, we do not see anything that stands out as foul play,” Milledgeville Police Department Maj. Brandon Sellers said. “We have talked fairly extensively to his roommates and other friends that knew him well; we’ve spoken with his father; and right now, it appears he had a medical condition that kind of reared its head and developed complications suddenly overnight.”

The roommates called 911 when they found Knight, and “at the request of the 911 operators, they removed him from his bed and attempted to do CPR,” Sellers said. “They were doing all they could to take care of their friend. It’s just so unfortunate that this happened.”

Knight had just celebrated his 23rd birthday in January, Sellers noted. A senior at Georgia College & State University, Knight was a geography major with a certificate in Geographic Information Systems. He was working his internship with the Baldwin County GIS & Mapping Department, which he began in September.

He was living in a two-story house in downtown Milledgeville on the 300 block of West Montgomery Street near the GCSU campus.

“Our agency got a lot of help from Georgia College Police Department,” Sellers said. “We wanted to know medical history pretty quickly, so they helped us with that. And they secured the scene because it was right there at the campus.”

Results are still pending from an autopsy to determine the cause of death, according to Baldwin County Chief Deputy Coroner Steve Chapple. He said it will take several months to receive the results from the Georgia Bureau of Investigations Crime Lab.
