Jones County High School Drama will present its spring musical, The Magician’s Elephant, March 27-29 in the Greyhound Auditorium.
Based on an award-winning novel, The Magician’s Elephant tells the story of Peter, a young boy living in the war-recovering town of Baltese, where very little ever seems to change. That changes when a magician unexpectedly conjures an elephant from the sky, setting off a series of events that transform the town and Peter’s life. As Peter searches for his long-lost sister, he forms an unlikely bond with the elephant and risks everything to set the animal free. The stage adaptation is licensed by Music Theatre International.
Jones County High School’s production marks a milestone for both the school and the state. The musical became available for licensing last summer, making Jones County High School the first school in Georgia to produce the show and only the second venue in the United States to do so, according to drama teacher Sarah Weese.
“Our students have worked tirelessly to bring the magic of this show to life. Musicals are not easy to produce, and for many of the students, it’s their first time performing. They should be celebrated and supported. Please come support these talented students,” Weese said.
The production also features a life-size elephant created specifically for the show by Jones County High School alumna Jay Round, Class of 2024.
Student actress Leah Reynolds said the musical’s themes of hope and community make it especially meaningful for students and audiences.
“Step into the town of Baltese and get ready for an adventure where anything can happen. If you’re searching for a touch of real magic, The Magician’s Elephant is the show to see. It’s a story that reminds us extraordinary things become possible when a community dares to dream together,” Reynolds said.
Community members are encouraged to attend and support the student cast and crew. Tickets are $7 and are available at GoFan.co.
