Summer production Shrek Jr. opens this weekend

Get out of your swamp and into the theater this weekend as Jones County Arts presents its summer production of a familiar and beloved story, Shrek Jr.

Throughout the week, students ages 8 to 18 have been working hard to bring this layered production to life, full of big laughs and heart that audiences of all ages are sure to enjoy.

Donkey, played by recent graduate Aaron Varnadoe, says audiences will not want to miss seeing local students take on such a well-known show.

“Everyone knows Shrek, but not like this. The musical makes the story so fun to watch, and it is honestly one of my favorites,” Varnadoe said.

Melody Dixon, who plays Fiona, agrees.

“Shrek is such a classic show. It has big numbers, emotional moments, and a great cast to go with it. Make sure you come see it,” she said.

Shrek Jr. will run at the W.E. Knox Civic Center on June 27 at 7 p.m. and June 28 at 3 p.m. Tickets are currently available online at jonescounty.booktix.com. Reserved seating is 18 for all ages, while general admission tickets are 12 for adults and 8 for students. Tickets will also be available at the door, cash or check only.

Varnadoe emphasized that the production has a limited run and encouraged the community to come out and support Jones County Arts.

“It will only be here for two days, so people need to be sure to come while they can,” Varnadoe said.

Don’t miss your chance to peel back the layers of this fun-filled show and support the talented youth of Jones County.
