July 31

Speeder with suspended license

Dep. Morgan was working speed enforcement on Hwy. 57 when his radar system alerted to a vehicle traveling at 77 MPH going north towards Milledgeville. Morgan activated his patrol emergency equipment and conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle. The deputy made contact with the male driver and advised the male that he was clocked doing 77 MPH in a 55-MPH zone.

Morgan asked the male driver where he was going, and the male stated he was going to a friend’s house.

Morgan advised the male driver that he would have him out of there quickly and went back to his patrol vehicle to run the male’s information and wrote a speeding citation. When the information came back on the male driver from the GCIC system, it showed his license was suspended and he only had a work permit meaning he could only go to work, medical issues and home if he was driving. The deputy returned to the male driver and advised him to step out of the vehicle and that he was under arrest for driving while license suspended or revoked. The male complied and stated that no one told him that he only had a work permit when he received the information over a year ago. Morgan transported the male driver to the Jones County Jail and allowed a licensed driver to retrieve the male’s vehicle. The deputy issued citations for speeding and excessive maximum limits and driving while license suspended or revoked.

Public drunk

Dep. Steib was dispatched to a local school in reference to a request for a deputy. Upon arrival, Steib spoke to a school employee that stated a male subject came to the school attempting to pick a student up and identified the student as his nephew. The male stated that he was the child’s uncle. The school employee also advised the deputy that the male attempted to enter the school but was refused by school personnel. Steib asked the school employee if the male subject was listed as an authorized person to pick the student up, and the male was not on the student’s pick-up list. The school employee gave the deputy a description of the male and what he was wearing, then provided the deputy an address of where the student resided. Steib went to the address of the student in an attempt to locate the male subject. Once the deputy arrived at the residence, he observed the garage door open and made contact with a male subject that identified himself as the student’s step-grandfather. Steib advised the male of the incident at school and the male stated he knew who this male subject was. While the deputy was asking the male subject for his identification, he noticed the male had slurred speech, glossy eyes, and was unable to maintain his balance. Steib also detected a strong odor of alcohol coming from the male’s breath. Based on the deputy’s observations, he believed the male subject was under the influence of alcohol. Steib advised the male subject that he was being charged with public indecency and public drunkenness.
