Suspected drug trafficker granted $85K bond

A Covington man facing a drug trafficking charge was granted an $85,000 bond on his second attempt in Jones County Superior Court.

Jason Lamar Williams, 42, was in court April 28 with his attorney H. Durance Lowendick for his bond request. The motion was heard by Superior Court Judge Stephen Bradley, and the case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Cara Fiore.

Lowendick told the court that his client was no risk to flee and was not a risk to the community.

The attorney said Williams has a family, and he needed to be able to work to support it.

“He’s fallen behind in his child support because he is in jail,” Lowendick said. Fiore said the state

Fiore said the state opposed bond. She said Williams was arrested Jan. 6 following a traffic stop. She said at that time it was discovered he had a suspended license, and 111 pills were found in the car. A gun was also found under the seat of the car.

“The pills were at first thought to be ecstasy but turned out to be meth,” she said.

The judge asked several questions about the case.

“I’m concerned about the amount of drugs he had, but he is entitled to a bond,” Bradley said.

The bond order also banned Williams from Jones County except for purposes of court appearances.

A report of Williams’ Jan. 6 arrest by Jones County Sheriff Department Deputy Dylan Joiner stated that he was monitoring traffic on Shurling Drive near the Dollar General store when he ran the plate on the Toyota Camry.

Joiner said the registration was suspended and the vehicle did not have insurance coverage. He said the driver was found in possession of a trafficking amount of MDMA ecstasy pills, a felony amount of marijuana, schedule II prescription pills, and a firearm during the commission of a felony.
