Inmate pleads guilty to crime committed while incarcerated

An inmate in the Jones County Law Enforcement Center pled guilty to the crime of entering an automobile in Jones County Superior Court that he committed while incarcerated.

Marquis Jarvis Napier was sentenced to three years to serve for the offense of entering an automobile May 19, following his guilty plea. Napier will receive credit for time served from April 19, the date the crime occurred, and was ordered to pay $960 in restitution.

Napier has been in jail since his Sept. 14, 2021, arrest for felony burglary in the first degree. That September arrest was also a violation of the probation he was serving for shoplifting and other misdemeanor charges.

The defendant was indicted on the burglary charge by a Jones County Grand Jury Oct. 13, 2021.

A report of Napier’s entering auto arrest by JCSO Investigator Lt. Kenny Gleaton stated that he entered the secured automobile impound lot April 26 on routine business. Gleaton noted that the gate of the lot was secured with a lock and chain when he entered it.

The investigator said he noticed a shattered window on a white Ford F-150 that he knew had not been damaged when it was stored on the lot. Gleaton also noted shattered windows on other vehicles in the lot.

The investigator said he notified Chief Earl Humphries and Investigator Lt. Kenny Allen, and the vehicles were inspected further. He said they found doors unlocked, glove boxes and consoles opened, which was not how the vehicles had been stored.

He added it is not known what items may have been taken from the vehicles.

Gleaton said the offenders, including Napier, were identified from video surveillance of the impound lot. He said the break-ins occurred while the inmates were inside of the impound lot cutting grass.
