River North break-ins lead to pursuit

SHERIFF’S OFFICE

Sheriff Butch Reece announced crimes taking place in River North in a Facebook post last week, and the investigation into the offenses is ongoing.

In the Sept. 2 post, Reece said Jones County Sheriff’s Office Deputies responded to several entering autos and a stolen vehicle.

He said suspects have been identified and the incidents were being investigated.

A report of the incidents by JCSO Deputy Matthew Dennis stated that a Toyota 4Runner was reported stolen, and while en route to the call, he saw three vehicles leaving the area in tandem on Upper River Road.

One of the vehicles was a Toyota 4Runner.

Dennis said he attempted to make a traffic stop but the vehicles accelerated and fled at a high rate of speed. The officer said the pursuit continued on Upper River Road toward Macon, but in regard for public safety, he slowed and lost contact.

Dennis said he felt sure he would be able to locate the vehicles and continued into Macon-Bibb County. He said the vehicles had separated, but he was able to maintain contact with a black Honda CRV.

The deputy said the pursuit crossed over Gray Highway to Emery Highway and through the Nu-Way parking lot to North Avenue. He said the pursuit ended at a dead end on North Garden Terrace, and the occupants of the vehicle fled.

Dennis said after the area was cleared, the vehicle was transported to the JCSO. He said multiple cell phones and firearms were located in the vehicle. The officer said unknown to him, a stolen Toyota 4Runner had wrecked during the previous pursuit. He said the driver sustained an accidental gunshot wound and was entrapped inside the vehicle.

The driver was released to medical personnel for treatment.

JCSO Investigator Lt. Kenny Gleaton said in an Sept. 2 email that there were approximately 25 separate reports of theft in the River North area Sept. 1.
