Greyhounds wrapping up spring with scrimmage against Veterans

GREYHOUND FOOTBALL

The Greyhounds have been banging up against one another since spring practice began. Someone different will be across the line on Friday night, however, with Veterans coming to Greyhound Field for Jones County’s Spring Scrimmage. It’ll be a return trip, with the Warhawks hosting the spring game between the teams last year. Friday will also be the first of two scrimmages for Jones County, which in August will play at Buford in a scrimmage.

The Greyhounds hosted the Wolves last year.

Veterans went 5-5 last year, coming up short of the postseason in a region with Houston County, Northside, Lee County and Thomas County Central.

“It’ll be great to have a home crowd; it’ll be exciting,” Greyhounds head coach Mike Chastain said. “We can’t wait to have that atmosphere.”

The Greyhounds will certainly rotate their top units onto the field for multiple series but also take advantage of second and third units also having a chance to go against someone besides themselves. At quarterback, for example, Judd Anderson will likely see time with the No. 1 offense with fans having a chance to see others’ progression in the offseason, such as backup quarterbacks Devin Edmonds and Will Keenum. It will also serve as a key building of chemistry between players and coaches, as a staff with five new coaches aboard will get a chance to coach players in a game situation for the first time since coming to Gray.

“It’ll be important for us to have a great day and be focused,” Chastain said.

“That’s key.”
