Camera alerts police to stolen car; driver arrested

GRAY POLICE DEPARTMENT

One of the new cameras placed in Gray to assist with community safety alerted law enforcement to a stolen vehicle and led to the arrest of a Lizella man.

Bobby Leon Parrish, 32, was arrested April 27 and charged for driving with a suspended or revoked license, theft by taking motor vehicle, possession of a controlled substance, smoking in public places and theft by receiving stolen property felony.

A report of the arrest by Gray Police Officer Daniel Pointer stated that he received the alert April 27 that a FLOCK camera near Ingles Market a picked up a stolen green Mercury Grand Marquis. The officer said he observed the vehicle enter the intersection of Washburn Drive and West Clinton Street.

Pointer said he was able to confirm the tag and conducted a traffic stop. He said the vehicle was blocked in with the assistance of GPD Capt. Eric Maynard, Officer Dylan Joiner and Lt. Jacob Hunnicutt. Pointer said duty weapons were drawn and verbal commands given for the driver to exit his vehicle, but he did not comply. He said Maynard and Hunnicutt went hands-on and took him into custody without further incident.

The officer said Parrish told him he traded his motorcycle for the car and did not know it was stolen. Pointer noted, however, that the vehicle was being driven with a shaved or partial key.

He said Parrish was transported to the Jones County Law Enforcement Center.

The officer said he returned back to the scene and assisted with inventorying the vehicle.

Items found in the vehicle were a smoking pipe with suspected methamphetamine inside and a capped syringe.

Located in the trunk was a Georgia Department of Corrections badge, a large collection of keys, a bag of doorknobs, a bulletproof vest, ammo, magazine, car tags and luggage with clothing and shoes.

Pointer said the badge, pipe, syringe and suspect’s phone were placed into an evidence bag, and all other items were left in the vehicle for the Warner Robins Police Department that listed the vehicle as stolen.
