JONES COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE
Racing on a public highway would never seem a good idea, but clocking more than 100 mph in a vehicle containing drugs would appear to be asking for unwanted attention.
Alexis Lee Evans, 24, was arrested Oct. 14 for charges of possession of methamphetamine, possession and use of drug-related objects, marijuana possession less than ounce, racing on highways or streets, reckless driving, speeding in excess of maximum limits and possession of schedule I narcotic.
A report of the arrest by Jones County Sheriff Office Deputy Joseph Caldwell stated that, at approximately 5 p.m. Oct. 14, he saw a white 2022 Dodge Ram racing a red Ford Mustang at a high rate of speed. He said the vehicles were clocked on his radar at a speed of 101 mph, while traveling toward Baldwin County. Caldwell said he activated his lights and siren to catch up to the vehicles to conduct a traffic stop. He said the Dodge Ram turned into a driveway, and the Mustang continued down Highway 49.
The deputy said he pulled in the driveway behind the Dodge Ram and had dispatch inform Baldwin County about the Mustang.
Once in the driveway, Caldwell said the driver, later identified as Evans, ran toward the house. He exited his vehicle, prepared for a foot pursuit, but Evans surrendered. He said the driver’s explanation about the race was “because the driver was cute.”
The deputy said Evans was placed into custody, and he asked her if there was anything in her vehicle that could get her into trouble. He said she told him there was marijuana in the console that she bought for her father, who had a medical marijuana card.
Caldwell said when back up arrived, he searched the Dodge Ram. He located a glass smoking device inside the driver door containing suspected methamphetamine residue. The deputy said he also found a plastic bag containing a crystallized substance suspected to be methamphetamine, a grinder containing a green leafy substance, two vape pens containing suspected THC oil, two more baggies of methamphetamine and $367 in cash.
Caldwell said all the items found were confiscated. As Evans was being walked to one of the patrol cars, she told the officer she had more narcotics on her person. The deputy said she was allowed to retrieve the items from her bra that were two more baggies of what appeared to be meth.
Evans was transported to the Jones County Law Enforcement Center and turned over to jail staff. Caldwell said the Dodge Ram was taken to the impound lot at the JCSO and secured until forfeiture paperwork could be completed. He said all illegal items were placed into evidence.
