SUPERIOR COURT
A Jones County defendant entered pleas to two cases in Superior Court last week, including charges of aggravated assault and burglary.
Wesley Dean Davis was in court Jan. 29 to enter the pleas. He received a sentence of 10 years on probation for aggravated assault and five years for the charge of burglary with the first 250 days to be served in confinement. The two sentences are to run concurrently, which means at the same time.
The 250-day sentence is suspended upon entry into a detention center for 150 days, and then the remainder of that sentence may also be served on probation.
Davis was arrested for the aggravated assault Nov. 12, 2023, by JSCO Deputy David Brown. In a report of his arrest, Brown said he was dispatched to an address on Sage Street in reference to domestic problems. Dispatch advised the deputy the dispute involved an attempted stabbing with a screwdriver.
Brown said he arrived on scene and gave Davis verbal commands to come outside. The deputy said with his Taser drawn, he ordered the suspect to come off the porch and get face down on the ground. Davis complied without incident. Brown said Davis was handcuffed and placed in the back seat of his patrol car while he spoke to others on the scene.
During his interviews, he was told the argument started over a piece of candy and escalated. Witnesses said the offender pushed one victim to the floor and attempted to stab her with the screwdriver and threatened to kill them all.
The witnesses said Davis left the house but returned and kicked the door in to gain entry. He also reportedly threatened to “kill the police, too.”
Brown said, after gathering the information, Davis was transported to the jail and charged.
The burglary charge is from a case that was reported May 14, 2021. The report of the burglary by JCSO Eric Mason stated he was dispatched to the scene of the burglary on Phillips Road.
The complainant told the officer someone had kicked in his back door and his power tools were stolen. He also named Davis as the suspected offender.
Mason said attempts to locate Davis that day were not successful.
A May 15, 2021, report from the deputy stated while on patrol in the area of Griswold Road he saw Davis walking along the road. He stopped to talk to the suspect and informed of the burglary allegations.
Mason said Davis denied the allegations at first but later admitted to the thefts and was taken into custody.
