A Jones County Grand Jury convened last week to consider a short list of cases, including aggravated assault, drug charges, burglary and identity fraud.
The jury was presented with 11 bills of indictment July 19 and brought back true bills on each case.
One of the more unusual cases involved an attempt to commit forgery on a Jones County governmental account.
The attempted forgery occurred in March and was reported to the Jones County Sheriff’s Office. Tyron Volley was arrested April 25, and he was denied bond in May. Volley was indicted last week for two counts of identity fraud.
According to the report of his arrest, Volley was identified in part due to tattoos that were visible in a surveillance video of him attempting to cash the check.
John Wayne Childers was indicted on charges aggravated assault, exploitation and intimidation of an elder person or disabled adult, obstruction and drug possession. Warrants were taken for his arrest in February after officers responded to a call on Avery Lane, but due to a recent medical procedure, he was not arrested until June 16.
The burglary of a home on Curtis James Road led to the arrests of Deladra Antwann Jackson and Samantha Shamar Thomas June 7, the day after the crime occurred. They were both indicted on charges of burglary in first degree and possession of methamphetamine.
Christopher Lee Hester was arrested and charged with aggravated assault, reckless conduct and the discharge of a firearm on a public highway June 20. A report of his arrest by Jones County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Jarrod Elrod stated that law enforcement was called by Hester, who alleged his vehicle had been rammed by a black SUV on Highway 18 East.
When officers investigated the report, Hester was determined to be the aggressor and had fired shots at the SUV. He was indicted by the grand jury for charges of aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of felony.
