Holland takes the reigns at Gray Elementary

Our mission at Gray Elementary remains steadfast, continues to build on the foundation laid by previous principals to improve student achievement, promotes a growth mindset through supporting the social emotional wellbeing of the whole child and continues to cultivate a positive culture as well as a safe and engaging learning environment.

The new principal of Gray Elementary School was formally introduced at the July 9 Board of Education meeting, but preparation for school’s new leader has been going on for many years.

Jennifer Holland may be new in the role as principal, but her face is familiar to students having served as assistant principal for the last three years. When she spoke to Board of Education members following her introduction, Holland said she fell in love with Gray Elementary over the past three years and calls it home.

In an email interview, the principal said there are countless reasons why she is passionate about being in education.

“Every day I am inspired by the students I have the privilege to work with. Their curiosity, energy and potential make the work incredibly rewarding,” she said.

Holland began her teaching career at the elementary school, starting with doing her student teaching there and returning to take her first job teaching first grade at the school, then third grade and the Early Intervention program.

“I am deeply honored and grateful for the opportunity to lead as principal of Gray Elementary,” she said.

Holland has been in education for 27 years, all in the Jones County School System. Her other positions include as the Title I Coordinator, Family Engagement Coordinator and Instructional Coach at Dames Ferry Elementary.

The principal said she has been fortunate to work alongside many educators who shared her passion for education and were dedicated to creating a supportive community striving to do its best for students.

“I am thankful to the mentors who have guided me through the years. Their wisdom and encouragement have been invaluable to me as an educator and leader,” she said.

The principal said a well-functioning school not only provides quality education but also fosters a sense of belonging and pride among students, staff and parents.

“Seeing a school operate smoothly and effectively and knowing that it has a positive impact to the community is incredibly satisfying,” Holland said.

She said staff members have been working diligently throughout the summer to prepare the building to ensure everything is ready for the return of teachers and students.

“Our goal is to create a welcoming atmosphere where every student and adult can thrive,” Holland said. “We want our students, families and faculty to feel inspired when entering our school.”

She added that she is thankful for the opportunity and is eager to continue the journey of fulfilling the goals and mission of making Gray Elementary a school of excellence.
