JCHS presents competition one-act play Angels of Bataan

Jones County High School Drama’s One-Act class is preparing a performance for a regional Georgia High School Association competition in McDonough to compete against 12 other school districts.

Drama Teacher Sarah Weese leads the One-Act class during the first period of the school day.

“The class consists of advanced drama students who have completed the lower-level drama courses,” Weese said. “One-Act students primarily focus on honing their performance skills through practicing a production.”

The One-Act group is taking Angels of Bataan, a Tracy Wells play to competition. The play is a World War II drama following the story of army nurses serving in the Philippines in the days after the attack on Pearl Harbor.

The One-Act performance group includes twenty-one students in the cast and crew. According to Weese, performers and crew members have worked on the production during the One-Act class period, after school, and throughout fall break to produce a successful performance.

Senior Jones County High School Drama student Brooke Cain is an actor in the play and has participated in many JCHS Drama productions.

“One act is more than just a group of students putting on a show. Its countless hours spent building relationships and finding your voice,” the student said.

Cain remarked that participating in the class means more than perfecting acting and performance skills.

“My friends in the One-Act class and Mrs. Weese have helped me raise my confidence, find my voice, and stand taller,” Cain concluded.

Before taking their production to competition in early November, the students will perform for the community Tuesday, Oct. 22, at 7:00 PM. Admission is $5.00 cash at the door. The JCHS Drama program welcomes any interested community members to attend.
