Greyhounds steamroll Howard 33-3

The Greyhounds spotted Howard three runs in the top of the first inning in their home opener on Monday night at Cecil Patterson Field.

Then, Jones County came to bat.

By the time two and half innings were gone, Jones County had wrapped up its next-to-last contest before region play, routing the Huskies 33-3 in a game marked not just by multiple runners crossing home plate, but homers by Jonathan Scarbary and Amir Harris as well.

“When you give someone runs in the first inning, getting runs back kind of sucks out the momentum that they have,” Greyhounds head coach Noble Coley said. “Some of our issues we’ve had at the plate. We kind of dialed that in and even had some guys hit one out.”

How overpowering was Jones County’s start that improved the Greyhounds to a 4-1 start? Consider the fact that the Greyhounds had batted around, not once, but three times in the first inning alone, leading 22-3 after an inning before tacking on 11 more runs in the second.

In all, 12 Greyhounds had at least one hit, led by Caleb Sark’s two. Not only that, but two RBIs a piece came from Micah Howard, Davis Upshaw, Cason Taylor, Harris, Emerson Robinson, Scarbary and Sark.

But don’t expect the Greyhounds to crown themselves as an offensive juggernaut, especially with region play starting Friday at home against Eagles Landing.

“I felt like we did some good things,” Coley said. “The bats are coming along, but with our schedule coming up, it’s about to be tough. Were happy, but were not satisfied.”

After Eagles Landing, JCHS plays Woodland next Wednesday and Friday with the latter being at home prior to a homeand- home with Locust Grove on March 10 and 12.

“We still have what we need and are still moving pieces around and we have to start finalizing it because on Friday, those are the ones that matter,” Coley said. “Nobody is going to remember 33-3.”
